Twitter 201

Twitter is a microblogging site where you can post short messages or ‘tweets‘ of 140 characters. The tweets of your followees show up in a main feed right on Twitter’s main page, in chronological order.

It’s been 2 years since I joined Twitter and while I’m on twitter for the past 24 months I learned some interesting infos that are worth sharing for the newbies. Below are some of the unusual basic facts about Twitter and tweeting.

  • If your tweets start with “@username….” it won’t seen by many people. It only appears on the timeline that follows both you and the person you’re replying to (However, it can also be found in Twitter search, or if someone visits @username’s Twitter page directly)
  • If you are not following a protected account(tweeter) you won’t see their tweets even if they mention you.
  • If you start a tweet with the word “get”, your tweet will disappear.
  • You can follow someone by tweeting “follow username” or just “f [username without the @]“.
  • If you want to favorite someone’s last tweet, type “Fav [username without the @]”
  • If you want to retweet someone’s last tweet, type “RT [username without the @]”
  • You can DM someone directly by tweeting “d @username <msg>”or  “dm @user <msg>”. Remember that you can only do this for those users who already follow you.
  • If you send someone a DM and they delete it, it disappears from your sent DMs as well as their received DMs box. If someone deletes their Twitter account (or it is suspended) all the DMs they sent to you will disappear as well.

I don’t know if you already know that and hope you’ll find it beyond the basic.
